Hampton, Virginia sits at the tip of the southernmost of the peninsulas that juts into the Chesapeake Bay. The region is commonly referred to as Hampton Roads and includes the cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Newport News, and Williamsburg. The distinct, flying saucer shaped, arena sits in sight of Interstate 64 alongside a lake.

The Hampton Roads Coliseum is a multi-use cultural, entertainment and sports arena in Hampton, Virginia. Construction on the arena began on May 24, 1968 and the venue opened in 1970 as the first large multi-purpose arena in the Hampton Roads region and the state of Virginia.
Construction cost $8.5 to $9.0 million USD
General Contractor McDevitt and Street Co.
Opening on December 1, 1969, then known as the Hampton Roads Coliseum, was the Hampton Roads metropolitan area's, and the state of Virginia's first large multi-purpose arena. It cost $9 million.

On January 28, 1970, the first concert took place , The Association.
The building's name is changed to Hampton Coliseum in 1974.(1)
Michael Jackson performed here on November 10, 1979.
In 1994, the exterior "butterfly" panels are scrubbed and painted as part of an ongoing $3 million renovation. The program of repairs to the building began in 1990.(1)


Concerts have included Elvis Presley, Rick James, Prince, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Phish and the Dave Matthews Band.

  1. I only saw the Dead once at Hampton, and it was at the very first show on 5/4/79. Brent's first tour and his third show overall.
