Mysteries Dark and Vast

All of the numbered images on this page are from unknown venues, unknown dates and unknown photographers.
Can anyone reading provide any assistance in determining their origin? I'm looking for venues, dates (year?) and photographer's names...and of course, any memories that you feel like sharing.

The funny thing is that I was there and I don't recall Cippo or anyone else on the stage. Of course, it was 5:45am and I was very, very tired.
The tip-off is that Phil was singing. If you look at the band personnel and the time (76-78, as Donna's there), Phil did not sing back then.

  1. I hope this helps:
#22 looks like backstage at Blues for Salvador benefit. I think the photographer would be Jay Blakesberg.
#19 seems like it is from 1974 from the interview session recently released with the re-release of the GD Movie
#9 - I believe this appears in Grushkin's Book of the Deadheads
#16 - I believe this comes from Golden Road interview with Hunter and Garcia. Photographer may be Blakesberg
#70 Wasserman's Trio album, probably Blakesberg
    #71 Egypt
#141 comes from the Golden Gate park 7/16/88 before a Greek show
#226 This may come for a Printknot Printers year-at-a-glance (which I used to do, but not at home right now so I can't check) from 1983 so the photo is probably 1982.
#158 - I think this is from Laguan Seca 1988 playing with openers Los Lobos. Again not at home and too lazy to check on date.

  5. Hi Matt,
Jerry's Brokendown Palaces publishes a Jerry Garcia venue every day so come back often or subcribe! What I mean is that all the venues are not yet published on this blog. The Miami Arena is a Grateful Dead venue as opposed to a non- Grateful Dead Garcia venue. Of course there are overlaps but I haven't published any strictly Grateful Dead venues yet. All of those and all of the non-Grateful Dead Garcia venues will be published in a three volume Encyclopedia Of Music Venues sometime in the next few years when I complete all the venues that Garcia performed in.

  6. here's mine:
#27: Ragged But Right photo session with the JGAB. Too lazy to figure out the photographer (you mean I have to go look at my cd?)

#51 and #129 seem to be the same photo, but #51 is cropped. I think that's Delaney Bramlett next to Jer. On the Festival Express, Delaney taught Jerry his arrangement of Going Down The Road Feelin Bad, which Garcia adopted (its on a Delaney and Bonnie & Friends album).

#69 The date is November 23, 1972 at the Armadillo World Headquarters. Another extant photo on the Jerry Site is by Burton Wilson. This may be a crop.

#138 and others: For the December 10-12, 1972 WInterland run, Jerry, Bob, Phil and Keith all wore spangled Nudie jackets. I wonder what became of them?

#143 I think I have seen this photo, and I think it is backstage at Oakland Coliseum Oct 9 or 10 '76 (Dead/Who)

#178 I believe this is the only known performance photo of The Warlocks, although it is obviously staged. Reputedly it is a promo photo for The In Room in Belmont, although nobody knows.

#188 someone is playing electric violin in the darkness there. Even I am stumped on that one.

#201 the photographer was not taking a picture of the Grateful Dead

#220 Isn't that Bruce Hornsby on accordian (I don't think its Lawrence Welk)? Points towards Laguna Seca, doesn't it?

#234 I'm pretty sure this photo is the very last song at Winterland, "And We Bid You Goodnight", and that it's John Cippolina on guitar on the far left of the picture. The funny thing is that I was there and I don't recall Cippo or anyone else on the stage. Of course, it was 5:45am and I was very, very tired.

The tip-off is that Phil was singing. If you look at the band personnel and the time (76-78, as Donna's there), Phil did not sing. In any case, how many times did the Dead come out without instruments and sing? Winterland is the only one I remember.

    1. #234 Phil actually did sing during this period, at least on Truckin', as can be seen on the '78 Duke video.

    2. John Cipollina (not Cippolina) was indeed at the closing-of-Winterland show. I know this because I was hauling equipment for him at the time. He finished a show at Cotati (with the Novato Frank Band) about midnight, then said goodnight to us, took his SG and got into his old Mercedes and took off for Winterland. We loaded his stack and gear into the van, took it to his studio, then went to a friend's house in time to see him come onstage for "Not Fade Away" (the show was simulcast on SF public TV).

  7. Those are some amazing shots! I've seen a lot of GD photos, and there are some really unique pics there. Thanks.

  8. #188 - electric violin player - i believe that would be Michael Doucet of the band Beausoliel, who opened one of the Dead's shows circa 1988/1989/1990. Oakland Coliseum, probably one of the Mardi Gras runs.

Thanks for this blog site btw. Holy crap. This is amazing!!

  9. Hi Marc,
#188 is captioned now. Thanks! This blog only covers the Non Grateful Dead Garcia venues. There are over 1060 Garcia venues where he rehearsed, performed, recorded and interviewed.
Would you happen to have any venue photos? I still need many to complete the Encyclopedia Of Jerry Garcia Music Venues before publishing.

  10. It seems like you have an answer for #190, MIT's Kresge Plaza from 5/6/70. Actually, I was dropping my son off at a day camp there this week and noticed that the plaza where the Dead played is exactly the same. I snapped a pic if you want it.

  12. #212 yes, they used this for the DLG release. This is an Ed Perlstein. But I think it's from La Paloma Theater, February 1976. Ed might be able to clarify. He has a new website.
