Free Stage, Hog Farm Camp, Max Yasgur's Farm, Bethel, NY

Jerry, Bob...hmmm It looks like them but it's actually THE QUARRY, from Pittsfield, Mass. They were the "house band" for the festival. The three in the pictures are, from left MIKE FUREY (lead guitar, "Jerry"), DANNY VELIKA (bass guitar, "Bob"), and MICK VALENTI (drums, "Phil").

Jerry, Bob...and Phil! NOT.

The free stage across the forest and down by the Hog Farm camp had it's own music and audience. Some of those groups, and some of the crew, never even saw the main stage. (1) The trail through the woods was called Groovy Way, a quarter mile path hung with Christmas lights.(2)
Hog farm camp had nine days to set up the free stage (they also ran the lighting for the stage)(4), medical tents, free food kitchen, serving booths, and information centers, and to set up the trip tents for those who, having partaken of mind-expanding drugs, needed to escape the noise, lights, people, and rain. (1)
At Thursday night at Woodstock [17] on a stage near the Hog Farm there was some group playing and between songs people could come up to the stage and make announcements. A lot of people were calling other people "motherfuckers," so a guy got up and said something like, "You ain't got no right to call nobody a motherfucker."
Then another guy got up and said, "My father was a motherfucker."
And the crowd cheered.

The Hog Farm Camp where two kitchens and food serving booths were set up, medical tips and the free stage. It became a safe and comfortable haven for hundreds of people and lots of little kids.(5)

What was once known as Yasgur's Farm. 40 years ago this was the area referred to as The Hog Farm at the 1969 Woodstock Festival.(5)

Jerry performed here on
at least one of the three days of Woodstock, August 15, 16, 17, 1969. (see above photos)

  1. Two of the photos where you identify "Jerry, Bob, hmmm" and "Jerry, Bob, and Phil" are incorrect. The band playing in the photos (actually the same picture, the second one cropped and the photo three up from the bottom is THE QUARRY, from Pittsfield, Mass. They were the "house band" for the festival. The three in the pictures are, from left MIKE FUREY (lead guitar, "Jerry"), DANNY VELIKA (bass guitar, "Bob"), and MICK VALENTI (drums, "Phil"). This sets the record straight.

    1. Are you certain? That looks like Jerry and Bob. Are they sitting in with The Quarry or is it just not them?

    2. It is the Quarry, but it is Mike Furey lead guitar, Dan Velika on bass, Mick Valenti drums and David Carron rhythm guitar and lead singer. Their drums are on the cover of the Woodstock album and they went on to play The Texas International POP Festival on the main stage with Zepplin, Hendrix, Rotary Connection and more....from the Berkshires in MA

  3. Yes! I spent most my time hangin out at the Free Stage area. I remember the Quarry being very good, and Ken Babbs being his outrageous self.

  4. So does anyone know if Jerry performed on the Free Stage?

  5. Yes, I am told he did but I don't have any photographic evidence. Nor that of Joan Baez who was also said to perform there.
